Brickworks Onderdendam 1 van 1 2

Brickworks Onderdendam (NL)

These are the ruins of an old stonefactory in the north of the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands there have been hundreds of stone and pot bakeries since the beginning of our era. Around 1880 there are, beside the many pot bakeries, almost 880 stone bakeries in the Netherlands. After this, however, the number decreases steadily. The history of Groningen, in particular the hogeland, is closely linked to the clay and the resulting brick industry.

This location has a dark history: after a long battle with the autorities the owner of this place killed himself. He locked himself in a room in one of the small buildings and died off carbon monoxide poisoning.
