Buorkerij It Fliet revisit
A farm situated in a wide, empty landscape in the southwest corner of Friesland. In the last century, summer sailing camps for young people from Brabant and Limburg were organized here.
The so-called Vinea Domini Sylkampen originated from a Catholic initiative to connect young people and thus foster relationships—and potentially families—a first version of “Farmer Wants a Wife” in the ’50s.
In 1959, the Augustinian Fathers of the monastery in Witmarsum began organizing sailing holidays for Catholic young people, as sailing camps brought young people together and required cooperation. The camp was supported by local shopkeepers, who provided boats and a wooden barracks, among other things.
The sailing camps quickly became popular; the young people enjoyed sailing and the social life that surrounded it. Despite separate dormitories, boys and girls regularly sought each other out at night. The camps ultimately resulted in several “Vinea marriages,” thus achieving their original goal. The atmosphere even led some priests to question their celibacy, sometimes leading to resignation!
