Military Camp Solomos – a closed chapter in local defense history

During the holiday of 2025, when we visited Lefkada and Parga in the region of Epirus, we were a few days in Preveza. On the outskirts of the small town lies the former military camp Solomos.

Strategically positioned a short distance from the harbor and Aktion Airport, the site served an operational role within the infrastructure of the Hellenic Army until approximately 2005. The compound consisted of barracks, administrative buildings, and supporting facilities, constructed in the sober and functional architectural style typical of military installations from the second half of the twentieth century.

Following its decommissioning, the camp gradually lost its military significance. The buildings have since remained vacant and are in an increasing state of decay. Peeling paint, shattered windows, and overgrown courtyards mark the grounds a silent witness to a closed chapter in local defense history.

Municipal councilor Vangelis Kyrlas asked about the future of the former Solomos camp in Preveza and proposed temporarily using the site as a parking area to ease summer traffic problems. The property is owned by the National Defense Fund and is designated in the urban plan as a future sports and recreation area.

Mayor Nikos Georgakos rejected past hotel development proposals and stated that the municipality aims to turn the site into a green recreational park, linked to the thermal baths, to increase much-needed urban green space.
