TAOL Winery

TAOL: the old wine factory of Lefkada

The last day of our summer holiday in Greece in 2025 we had to spend some time till late afternoon, waiting for our flight to take off. Because we were close to the old winery of Lefkada Town, we decided to take a quick visit at this abandoned factory building.

TAOL, founded in 1915, was the first wine-producing cooperative in Greece and played a crucial role in the agricultural development of Lefkada. The organization emerged during a period of crisis: due to mildew and low market prices, the island’s grape growers were under severe pressure. TAOL united these farmers, protected them from exploitation, and provided a system of collective production and trade.

In the decades that followed, the cooperative expanded into a broader agricultural network that also included olive growers and other local producers. A significant turning point came in 1952, when TAOL acquired several regional wineries and built a large central wine factory in Kastro, at the entrance to Lefkada Town. This building became a prominent landmark and the heart of the island’s wine and olive oil production.

Although farming on the island has declined in recent years due to an ageing rural population and the rise of tourism, TAOL remains active as a cooperative and a symbol of local heritage. The historic but decaying winery in Kastro is now considered an industrial monument, with plans for cultural reuse in the future.
